What Is Laser Dentistry?
Many dental procedures require the modification of hard tissues (teeth) or soft tissues (gums) in the mouth. In the past, dentists used drills or scalpels to complete these procedures, which also required injections of local anesthesia. These traditional methods can be effective, but they can result in discomfort, excessive bleeding, and lasting numbness. Plus, the sound of the dental drill and the sight of the needle has caused many children and adults to form some degree of dental anxiety.
Now, thanks to dental lasers, the hard and soft tissues in your mouth can be treated with no drills, no scalpels, and no needles. Through laser dentistry, Drs. Nicholas Perry Orchard and Alejandro Vilamil can complete your treatment in less time with increased precision, and anxious patients don't have to stress about scary drilling sounds or numbing shots.
Our dentists can use lasers to...
- Remove decayed tissue from a cavity
- Perform cosmetic gum contouring
- Prepare teeth for crowns or veneers
- Treat infected teeth before root canal therapy
- Much more!

Solea Laser
The Solea® dental laser was the first CO2 laser cleared by the Food and Drug Administration to treat teeth and gums. Our dentists in Corpus Christi, TX, can use this laser to treat cavities, reshape teeth, and perform gum contouring, often without the use of anesthesia. The soft tissue laser can also be used, in some cases, to remove excess tissue and reduce chronic snoring.

Waterlase
Waterlase by BIOLASE® is an innovative hard and soft tissue laser that combines laser energy with a cooling spray of water. The water prevents your teeth from getting too hot, so there is virtually no discomfort during your dental procedure. Waterlase can be used for all kinds of oral treatments at our Corpus Christi office, including decay removal and preparation for dental crowns.

Laser Dentistry FAQs
Will dental insurance cover laser dentistry?
The use of dental lasers shouldn't have any effect on your insurance coverage. Procedures that are normally covered will still be covered. Our team can help you review your insurance policy and maximize your benefits. If your insurance won't cover your full treatment, we can also help you take advantage of CareCredit® financing.
Is laser dentistry safe?
Yes! In the hands of experienced professionals like Drs. Roberston and Orchard, laser dentistry is just as safe as traditional dentistry. In fact, it could be considered safer because the tools are much more precise and they often do away with the requirement for anesthesia.
Can dental lasers be used on children?
Absolutely. Lasers can be used on patients of all ages. Our doctors may use lasers during your child's pediatric cleaning, or when preparing your child's tooth for a filling. You could argue that it's preferable for children to experience laser dentistry because they won't develop a fear of dental drills and needles.
Which laser is right for me?
Whether our dentists use the Solea laser or Waterlase laser during your appointment will depend on the type of treatment you are receiving, the extent of your treatment, and other factors. You can trust that either system will produce great results as precisely and comfortably as possible. If you're curious about which technology will be used for your procedure, feel free to ask us at your consultation.
