Each tooth in your mouth is comprised of two primary parts: the visible crown and the root below the gums. When it is damaged, the top portion can be completely covered with a restoration. Usually made of metal or porcelain, a restorative dental crown renews a tooth’s strength and health, and can also relieve pain caused by decay or a deep fracture. Dental crowns may be recommended if:

• Tooth decay is too deep or advanced for a filling to correct
• A fracture compromises the integrity of a tooth
• The teeth are significantly worn down because of grinding and clenching

Placing Your Crown

Just a few decades ago, placing crowns required a minimum of two dental appointments. Today, Dr. Orchard is able to offer same-day crowns with CEREC® technology. Using 3-D X-ray imaging, digital design software, and a self-contained milling unit, the CEREC® system fabricates a durable, natural-looking, all-porcelain dental crown in one appointment.

If CEREC® is right for you, expect your appointment to last about two hours in total – and remember that you won’t need to come back for a follow-up. You also will not have to wear a temporary crown. Your permanent CEREC® crown will be securely in place when you leave our office.     

Caring for Your Restoration

If you take good care of your oral health and do not damage your crown, e.max crowns can last seven to 15 years (if not longer). CEREC® blocks are porcelain cubes of e.max that come in various shades of white. The porcelain used for CEREC® blocks underwent two decades of testing and has been proven highly durable. A crown manufactured with CEREC® can be expected to last as long as one made in a laboratory.
